Donation FAQ

Who can make a gift to the OpenSSL Foundation?
The Foundation welcomes financial support from any individual or organization who wants to contribute to better data privacy and security for all and is able to execute a payment to our US-registered legal entity. We reserve the right to decline gifts that might incur legal, financial, reputational, or other risks, as assessed by the Foundation’s management team.
How do I make a donation?
One-time or monthly gifts can be made via Github Sponsors (up to $12,000 USD). We also accept gifts via bank transfer, from both US and international banks. For further instructions on these or other ways to give, please contact us.
How else can I get involved personally?
We invite everyone to join and participate in OpenSSL’s online community, subscribe to our mailing lists and YouTube channel, follow our blog, and connect with us on LinkedIn.
How else can my company get involved?
We encourage companies to make their staff aware of the OpenSSL online community, especially the Large and Small Business communities that are represented in that online forum. These communities collaborate to shape the development and adoption of OpenSSL Foundation and OpenSSL Corporation projects, ensuring that they meet the varied needs of all users.

Many companies also provide paid work time or other incentives to encourage their staff to participate in open source software development. We are grateful for initiatives like these, which help build a thriving community of skilled individuals who continuously improve the OpenSSL Library. If you are doing this already, please let us know!

OpenSSL Corporation also offers support contracts, which provide guaranteed customer support and other exclusive services related to OpenSSL products. Whether sponsoring the Foundation, buying services from the Corporation, or both, your support will directly contribute to the ongoing maintenance and improvement of the OpenSSL Library.

Do sponsorship prices change over time?
We occasionally revisit our sponsorship programs to ensure that pricing, levels, and benefits are in line with market realities. In the event that prices increase, current sponsors will still receive the full slate of benefits promised to them at the time of their gift, through the end of their sponsorship period. When that sponsor later renews, their renewal will be subject to the new pricing. Sponsors who make a mutli-year, up-front commitment will be locked into their rate for the full period of that sponsorship agreement, even if prices increase.
Do sponsors get to determine the Foundation’s roadmap or otherwise influence the projects they fund?
No. Sponsorship support makes work possible but does not grant the sponsor any decision-making authority over the work. The OpenSSL Foundation welcomes and seriously considers all sponsor input, and we are committed to keeping sponsors informed of progress on work they are funding. However, as a free and open source software project, we take seriously our commitment to the broader FOSS community and treat funder input as one perspective among many.
Do you offer custom sponsorship packages?
Yes! Contact us to schedule a call. We’d be happy to develop a custom sponsorship package that meets your budget and business needs.
Is the OpenSSL Foundation a non-profit organization?
The OpenSSL Foundation is a Delaware-registered non-stock, non-profit corporation in the United States. We are organized as and operate as a non-profit, in service of a mission that respects data privacy and security as a human right. However, we are not at this time registered as a 501c3 tax-exempt charity under the US Internal Revenue Service code; as such, donations and sponsorship gifts are not tax-deductible.
