OpenSSL Foundation at GitHub Universe 2025
We’re starting the new year with an entirely new look. Our new website has just launched, and we invite you to be among the first to explore it!
Our chief goal with this new website was to create a friendlier and more personal digital presence for OpenSSL Foundation, helping you see the people whose work is often hidden “behind the screens.” You’ll also notice that we moved our website to a new domain, one that we hope is a bit easier to remember – openssl.foundation. openssl-foundation.org should start redirecting to openssl.foundation in not too long, and we’ll be updating our email addresses in the coming weeks as well.
The Foundation exists to serve and protect a global audience of internet users, and we want anyone who cares about data privacy and security to be able to understand and connect with our work. For this reason, the new website intentionally speaks to a wider audience, not just technical folks who actively use OpenSSL software, but everyone, everywhere who benefits from these data privacy and security tools.
This shift in focus – from direct users only to a wider circle of beneficiaries – stems from governance reforms that the OpenSSL ecosystem underwent in early 2024. At that time, OpenSSL Foundation was re-established as an independent entity, with its own staff, programs, and finances. Soon after, we completed a rebranding effort that launched a new logo and a mission statement describing OpenSSL Foundation’s unique role within the broader OpenSSL ecosystem:
The OpenSSL Foundation works to ensure that everyone, including nonprofits, academics, and independent developers, has access to fundamental data privacy and security tools that are the backbone of internet protection, quietly safeguarding millions of users. We do this to help build a safer internet — one that serves the public interest and upholds privacy and security as foundational rights.
For those who are here for the software, our website serves as an entry point to our community, helping you learn about our work and discover how to get involved. Deeper technical content remains on the OpenSSL Library website, and the Communities hub continues to be the primary space for technical communities to influence the direction of the OpenSSL Library.
